About this species

The Dugong — the real-life origin of mermaid legends — is India's only herbivorous marine mammal, grazing on seagrass beds in shallow coastal waters. India's most significant population is found around the Gulf of Mannar and the Andaman Islands. Sightings require dedicated boat trips and considerable patience. See Dugongs in India's coastal marine parks. Rare seagrass-grazing mammals — boat safari guide, Gulf of Mannar, and Andaman tours.

Plan field days around Jan–Dec: light is often strongest at dawn and dusk, when many mammals and birds are most active. Work with a naturalist who knows local movement patterns — they will position you ethically while improving your odds of a encounter in Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park.
