About this species

The Great Slaty Woodpecker is the world's largest woodpecker — a magnificent grey bird nearly half a metre long, with a powerful resonant drumming that echoes through the forest. Found in old-growth forests of Northeast India, it requires large dead trees for nesting. Namdapha and Pakke are the best locations.
